Rømø – The Island of My Dreams

Mom has had this one favorite line for years: “One day I’ll quit my job and we’ll move to an island where life will be perfect!” I always thought she meant some sunny island way down south – where I’d have endless sand under my paws and the smell of grilled fish in the air. But guess what? We ended up finding our dream island somewhere totally different – in Denmark!

So, how did we actually get there?

The island of Rømø is what I like to call an “almost-island” – it’s connected to the mainland by a long causeway. Which means you can just drive right over. No ferries, no drama – just a smooth ride and boom, your paws are already tapping on island ground.

The cozy cottage of our dreams

The place we stayed? Absolute paradise! A bright, cozy little house – with our very own hot tub. Mom said it was for “relaxation”… but honestly, I thought it was just a giant dog bowl filled with warm water.

Finding a place to stay on Rømø is super easy. You can book through booking.com, or try novasol.co.uk. The cool thing about Novasol? You simply enter the number of humans and the number of four-pawed travelers, and it shows you only the dog-friendly cottages. Tail-wagging guaranteed!

Dog-friendly tips 🐾

Cycling Paradise 🚲

Rømø is flat as a pancake and crisscrossed with endless bike paths – basically heaven for paws and pedals. Even I had my very own cool ride!

In Havneby you can rent bikes at 👉 romocykler.dk – and the owner has a dog too, so of course we became instant buddies.

Here’s the best part: you can rent special cargo bikes for dogs (Babboe). They’re stable, safe, and give your furry sidekick a front-row view of the adventure. Kids can ride in them too… and yep, even humans. (Mom and I tested it – five stars, would recommend!) And don’t worry if Danish skies decide to cry a little – some of the bikes even come with a roof, so your pup stays cozy and dry.

 Hundebutikken 🛍️

This little store is an absolute must-stop. They’ve got everything from raincoats to treats and toys – perfect if you forgot something at home or just want to spoil your furry friend with a souvenir. The best part? It was only a few steps from our cottage, so Mom and I quickly became regulars. My top purchase? A stylish raincoat. Honestly, I looked like a Milanese dog model strutting the runway.

Lakolk strand 🏖️

This beach is straight out of a fairytale! The coolest part? You can actually drive your car right on the sand. We prefer biking, but watching all those cars roll by was like a live-action dog movie. And the sunsets? Wow. Way better than anything on Dogflix!

⚠️ Heads up, pals! From April 1 to September 30, pups have to stay on leash at the beach – it’s the busy summer season. But outside those dates? Total freedom. You can run wild and leash-free like the happy beach pup you were born to be.

Dog-Friendly Restaurants 🍽️

Our absolute favorite? Frankel 5 in Havneby. Pups are welcome both inside and out on the terrace. There’s parking for cars and bikes right out front. Plus, the views are amazing – and if it rains, they’ve got a cozy winter garden so you can still enjoy your meal in comfort.

And when Mom had a sweet tooth, we stopped at Rømø Pandekagehus. Their pancakes are legendary! Best part? They let me inside like a true canine gentleman.

Hundeskov 🌲

Imagine this: huge dog runs, fully fenced, but looking just like a real forest. None of those tiny XXS dog parks where you can’t even chase a ball properly. Nope – this is your very own private, fenced woodland. Perfect for zoomies, sniffing, and a good game of tag.

Your humans will love it too – there are benches to sit on, and restrooms right by the parking lot. And guess what? There are several of these dog forests all over the island. Just pick your favorite and let the fun begin!
