Dog-friendly Denmark: The country where dogs live hygge too
Hey friends! It’s me again, Kyon – globe-trotter, adventure pup, and now your official guide to Denmark – the country where I first sat down on a beach and thought: “Yep, this is hygge.” (No translation needed – every dog just knows when it’s hygge.)
So, what’s on my waggy-tailed list for you today?
👉 How we got there
(the adventure of crossing into Denmark, car vibes, ferry if needed – Kyon’s POV)
👉 My Top beaches
(best sandy spots for zoomies, paw-dips in the sea, and sunsets)
👉 Copenhagen with paws
(dog-friendly cafés, parks, city strolls, and maybe bike rides!)
👉 The Lego adventure
(Billund + LEGOLAND – what it means for two-legged travelers and where pups fit in)
👉 My Dream Island
(Rømø story – the highlight, with the Hundebutiken, the dog forests, the beach where cars drive, etc.)
The road to Denmark: ferries, cars, and why the wind messed up my fur
We drove all the way through Germany — Lucka kept calling it a “road trip.” For me, that meant more potty breaks and way fewer rules in the back seat. Win-win!
I even got to pick toys straight out of my travel bag: my squeaky beaver and my favorite frog made the cut. (They’re basically my emotional support crew.)
At one point we hopped on a ferry. Do you know what that is? Imagine a giant floating box where you can walk around on your leash, sniff everything, and even go outside on deck. The sea breeze totally messed up my fur, but I didn’t mind — it felt like freedom! The only catch? No paws allowed in the restaurant or the shop. Humans only.
Kyon’s Travel Tip: Ferry Life
On the ferry, good manners are key: don’t bark at the waves. Trust me, they’ll just ignore you. Make sure to potty before boarding — short ferries usually only have restrooms for the two-legged crew. Bonus? I got to sail for free!
We took the Rostock–Gedser route, about two hours long. We arrived at the port roughly 35 minutes before departure. Heads up: check-in closes 15 minutes before the ferry leaves, so don’t cut it too close.
Lucka booked our ticket at 👉 www.scandlines.com
When we arrived in Denmark, we had a quick passport check. The officer even looked at my pet passport — mainly to see if my rabies vaccine was up to date — and she complimented my photo. (What can I say? I’m photogenic.)
My Top beaches in Denmark
Rømø Sønderstrand
Yeah, the name sounds funny, but trust me—it’s paradise! I sniffed out the most magical sunsets here. And get this: cars (you know, those four-wheeled boxes humans love) are actually allowed to drive right on the sand!
Blåvand Strand
Over on the mainland, this beach is dog-friendly and has dunes you can roll in. There’s even a lighthouse where humans take way too many selfies. I recommend focusing on digging holes.
Dog-friendly Copenhagen
In Copenhagen, I felt like a true Danish king. Everyone smiled at me— some even took my picture like I was a celebrity pup.
Strolling down Nyhavn? Total dream. We even hopped on a little boat ride. Nothing makes me happier than the wind fluffing up my fur!
Of course, it started to rain—that’s classic Danish weather. But no worries: Lucka had an umbrella big enough to tuck me under. Royal treatment, if you ask me.
Friends, I can totally recommend a canal cruise in Copenhagen! It’s super dog-friendly—I even had my own seat with a view, and guess what? Free ticket for me. 🐶🙌
No need to book ahead—just show up, grab your human’s ticket, and hop aboard. From the boat you see almost the whole city, all the famous spots from a fresh angle. And yes, they don’t skip the Little Mermaid. 🧜♀️ I barely spotted her through the crowd of tourists, but hey, still worth it!
The Metro: A Long Box That Doesn’t Just Run Underground
Did you know the metro in Denmark has no driver? Yep—nobody at the wheel! I got to sit right in the very front and pretend I was the captain of this giant moving box. Best game ever. 🐶🙌
What does a pup need to ride the Copenhagen Metro?
– a child ticket
– a leash (always!)
– no muzzle required 🙅♂️
So hop on, snag the front seat, and enjoy the ride — it feels like flying through the city!
A few practical tips
Tivoli Gardens – No pups allowed… unless it’s their annual Dog Day (yep, just once a year). Sadly, I had to skip the roller coasters.
City Parks – Pure gems! Green grass, shady trees, and plenty of space to sniff around. Perfect for a royal stroll.
The Lego adventure
This chapter is probably more for your humans — especially if they’re LEGO fans or have little (or not-so-little) builders at home. Honestly, though, I think adults are just kids in a bigger size.
We’ll sniff around both LEGO House and LEGOLAND — I’ll tell you what the differences are, what not to miss, where I was welcome, and where I, sadly, had to stay back at the hotel for a proper pup rest day.
Great news: LEGOLAND® Billund is now pup-friendly!
And the rules? Lucky for me, I’m a well-behaved boy:
🦮 Always on a leash – so I don’t switch from “tourist” to “runaway explorer.” (Oh, and retractable leashes don’t count here!)
👀 Under supervision – don’t even think about leaving your pup alone. I know I’m adorable, but babysitting isn’t on the list of attractions.
💩 Keep it clean – if it drops, it gets scooped. No excuses! Free poop bags are waiting at the entrance.
What can you experience in LEGOLAND® with your four -legged buddy?
Even though us furry pals aren’t allowed on rides or inside restaurants (too bad—I would’ve crushed that roller coaster!), there’s still plenty to explore:
🚶♂️ Strolling the park – all the paths and walkways are ours to wander. You can sniff around LEGO Kingdoms, Miniland, and all those magical corners.
🧺 Chill & picnic zones – when the paws get tired, there’s always a spot for a blanket, a snack, and a tail-wagging break (for both humans and pups).
💧 Fresh water everywhere – water bowls are scattered around the park, so no thirst here. I even found one with my portrait—made out of LEGO, of course!
LEGO HOUSE
Okay, first the sad news—pups aren’t allowed inside LEGO House. So yeah, I had to stay back at the hotel and treat myself to a self-care day: stretched out on my bed, paw on the kibble bowl, binging a full season on Dogflix.
But listen—when Lucka came back, her eyes sparkled brighter than LEGO bricks in a shop window. She said it was unreal! Most people only know LEGOLAND, but right in Billund you’ll also find LEGO House—basically the holy grail for builders of all ages.
Each floor is a different “universe of play,” packed with spots where you can build, test, or just admire crazy creations. Basically, LEGO heaven.
And oh—I can’t forget about the Mini Chef Restaurant: a total must visit! You order your food using LEGO bricks, and then a robot delivers it to your table. It’s like sci-fi—but in colorful plastic blocks.
